Design and Technology

Design and Technology provides opportunities for pupils to develop their capability, through combining their designing and making skills with knowledge and understanding to enable them to create quality end products. During their work the children are encouraged to make creative use of a wide range of materials, components, structures, products and applications.

Through following the National Curriculum we aim to ensure that all our pupils can develop creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform every day tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world. They will build an apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high quality prototypes and products. They will critique, evaluate and test their idea and products and the work of others. They will understand and apply the principle of nutrition and learn how to cook.

Key Stage 1

Through a variety of topics and themes which work in a range of contexts the children will be taught to:

Design - purposeful, meaningful products for themselves and other users.  They will generate, develop, model and communicate their ideas through talking, drawing, making templates, mock - ups and, where appropriate, information technology.

Make - select from a range of tools and equipment to perform practical tasks e.g. cutting , shaping , joining and finishing. They will select form a range of materials and components such as ingredients, textiles and construction materials.

Evaluate - they will explore and evaluate a range of existing products and evaluate their own ideas and products against criteria.

Technical knowledge - They will build structures and explore how to make them stronger, stiffer and more stable. They will explore and use mechanisms such as levers, wheels and axles. In KS1 the children will be taught to use the basic principles of healthy and varied diet to prepare dishes and understand where food comes from

Key Stage 2

Key stage 2 will build on the skills and knowledge acquired in KS1 and be taught to:

Design - use research to design innovative and functional products that are fit for purpose and aimed at particular individuals and groups.  They will use annotated sketches, cross-sectional and exploded diagrams, prototypes, pattern pieces and computer aided design.

Make - continue to use a variety of tools and select form a wider range of materials and components according to their functional properties and aesthetic qualities.

Evaluate - investigate and analyse a range of existing products. They will evaluate their own ideas against their own criteria and consider the views of others.

Technical Knowledge - apply knowledge of how to strengthen, stiffen and reinforce more complex structures. They will use mechanical systems in their products such as gears, pulleys, levers and gears. They will also use electrical systems in products such as switches, circuits, bulbs, buzzers and motors.  In KS2 the children will apply the principles of healthy diet.  They will prepare and cook a variety of predominately savoury dishes using a range of cooking techniques. They will learn about seasonality and know where and how a variety of ingredients are grown.
