Design and Technology provides opportunities for pupils to develop their capability, through combining their designing and making skills with knowledge and understanding to enable them to create quality end products. During their work the children are encouraged to make creative use of a wide range of materials, components, structures, products and applications.
Close links are made with the Wirral Learning Lighthouse, Discovery Centre and West Wirral Works to ensure that all pupils access the opportunity to develop a wide range of skills.
Through following the National Curriculum we aim to ensure that all our pupils can devlop creative, technical and practical expertiseneeded to perform every day tasks confidentlyand to particiapate successfully in an increasingly technological world. They will build an apply a repertoire of knowledge ,understanding and skillsin order to design and make high quality prototypes and products. they will critique, evaluate and test their idea and products and the work of others. They will understand and apply the pricipal of nutrition and learn how to cook.
Key Stage 1
Through a variety of topics and themes which work in a range of contextes the children will be taught to:
Design - puposeful, meaningfulproducts for themselves and other users. They will generate , develop, model and communicate their ideas through talking, drawing , making tempplates, mock - ups and , where approriate information technolology.
Make - select from a range of tools and equipment to perform practical tasks eg cutting , shaping , joining and finishing. They will select form a range of materials and components such as ingredients, textiles and construction materials.
Evaluate - they will explore and evaluate a range of existing products nand evaluate theor own ideas and products against criteria.
Technical knowledge - They will build structures and explore how to make them stronger, stiffer and more stable. They will explore and use mechanisms such as levers, wheels and axles.
Key Stage 2
Key stage 2 will build on the skills and knowledge acquired in KS1 and be taught to:
Design - use research to design innovative and functional products that are fit for purpose and imed at particular individuals and groups. They will use annotated sketches, cross-sectional and explded diagrams, prototypes, pattern pieces and computer aided design.
Make - continue to use a variety of tools and select form a wider range of materials and components according to their functional properties and aesthetic qualities.
Evaluate - investigate and analyse a range of existing products. They will evaluate their own ideas against their own criteria and cionsider the views of others. They will understand how key events and indiviuals in design and technology have helped shape the world.
Technical Knowledge - apply knowledge of how to strengthen , stiffen and reinforce more complex structures. They will use mechanical systems in their products such as gears, pulleys, cams levers and linkages. they will also use electrical systemsin priducts such as switches, circuits, bulbs , buzzers and motors. they will apply their understanding of computing to program, monitor and control their products.
Cooking and Nutrition
In KS1 the children will be taught to use the basic principles of healthy and varied diet to prepare dishes and understand where food comes from
In KS2 the children will apply the principles of healthy diet. They will prpare and cook a variety of predominately savoury dishes using a range of cooking techniques.. They will learn about seasonality and know where anf how a variety of ingredients are grown, reared, caught and processed.
